Posing:

Is the artistic arrangement of a model’s body and facial expressions to create a specific look or mood
Is an art form that combines creativity and physiological technique
Is knowing how to move your body to create lines or geometric shapes for the camera.
Understanding how light/shadow work when light falls across the human anatomy.

Posing requires a basic understanding of human anatomy and how to manage your flexibility limitations for your body’s parts.
Understanding the range of motion for limbs, digits and major body parts (head, neck, shoulders, hips, etc).
Core and muscular strength – holding poses for long periods requires bending, flexing and/or holding head, neck, hands, arms and legs in one position for extended periods. Happens individually or in conjunction with one or more additional people.

Modeling:

Is all about aesthetics and incorporates posing but goes much further. It involves learning and knowing how to pose or runway walk, how to work with photographers, and personal image development/cultivation. Taking care of your body – knowing how to handle bloat, water retention, skin healthcare (face and body) as well as weight/body fat.

The Key Differences:

Modeling requires the model to possess the ability to follow directions quickly and efficiently, posing in particular ways or recreating looks for hours at a time. Modeling is having a variety of poses in your arsenal for the type of modeling you are performing during the shoot. You’ll also need to know how to angle your face and body for the camera to convey the right image based on the mood, theme and look of the campaign as directed by the photographer or artistic director. Modeling also requires basic understanding of photography fundamentals. Understanding terms such as (wide angle, depth of field, focal range, shutter speed, flash sync, and lighting variations – studio/natural/strobe/high vs low contrast).
